SAMUEL QUILL: Continental deserter and hunter-for-hire. Some folks call him Squeal because of how he uses a corncob striker and a piece of slate to call up his wolves. Makes a sound like a wild pig. And wolves, even these wolves, love them pigs.
*
PHINEAS: Foundling. Orphaned when Quill shot his dad. Good eyesight. Always spots them first. The Boy Who Cried Wolf.
*
THE VILLAGE WOMAN: First person in Washington Forge to actually see the Wolf (as opposed to just the eviscerated livestock it leaves behind). Witnesses the Wolf's horrific attack on her husband out by the splitting block.
*
THE SMITH: The Forge in Washington Forge. Makes everything from sewing needles to cowbells, hammers to horseshoe nails, and, yes, silver musket balls.
*
THE PREACHER: Believes the WOLF attack to be an ordinance of God, a punishment for the village's transgressions.
*
THE WOLF. The less you know, the better.
